Celebrity caused Monica's rise and fall
What has the last 8 months taught us about Detroit elections? It should have taught us that campaigns and elections that result in people getting elected based on their celebrity does not work. Mayor Kilpatrick came from a family of politicians with well known names. Monica Conyers is married to the esteemed Congressman John Conyers. Martha Reeves is a former Motown singer. If Monica had run as Monica Estes she most likely would've never been elected and therefore would not be facing 5 years of prison time for bribery. As long as we allow celebrity to determine who we elect to office we run the risk of getting the same result. Of the 167 current candidates for City Council there some who are considered the head of the class because of their celebrity. Just looking honest or sounding good should not be a criteria for holding public office. We have recent examples to show us that this model doesn't work.

Chief Barren Fired
Chief  James Barren has been fired by Mayor Dave Bing effective Monday July 6, 2009. Barren was appointed as Chief by former mayor Ken Cockrel last fall.  Cockrel lost the mayor's seat to Bing who promised during the election and after he  won that Barren would remain the chief. Barren will reportedly be replaced by Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans. Barren oversaw a department that was devastated by the previous leadership and he quickly restored morale and confidence in the police. This change is dure to have a major effect on police morale.
